Celebrating the Safe Use of Radiation
Every year on 8 November, World Radiography Day commemorates the discovery of X-rays by Wilhelm Röntgen in 1895, a breakthrough that transformed science, industry, and medicine. While the day is often associated with medical imaging, it also provides an opportunity to recognise the many ways radiation is used across a range of sectors and to celebrate the professionals who help ensure it is used safely and responsibly.
Today, ionising radiation is used in a wide variety of applications. In healthcare, it supports the diagnosis and treatment of disease. In industry, it is used for non-destructive testing, quality control, and process monitoring. Radiation also plays an important role in research, education, manufacturing, security, energy production, and veterinary practice. These diverse applications deliver significant benefits to society, helping to improve safety, efficiency, innovation, and public wellbeing.
The successful use of radiation depends not only on advanced technology but also on a strong commitment to safety. Organisations that work with ionising radiation have a responsibility to protect employees, contractors, members of the public, and the environment from unnecessary exposure. Achieving this requires effective planning, suitable control measures, and a culture in which radiation safety is embedded into everyday operations.
World Radiography Day provides an opportunity to highlight the partnership between radiographers, employers, Radiation Protection Advisers (RPAs), Medical Physics Experts (MPEs), Radioactive Waste Advisers (RWAs), and Radiation Protection Supervisors (RPSs). Together, these professionals help ensure that imaging and treatment involving ionising radiation are carried out safely, effectively, and in compliance with legislation.
Behind every high-quality image and successful treatment is a framework of policies, risk assessments, quality assurance programmes, and professional advice designed to protect staff, patients and the public. Radiation protection specialists help organisations navigate complex regulations, implement best practice, and ensure that safety remains a priority as technology and clinical demands evolve.
World Radiography Day is also an opportunity to raise awareness of the principles that underpin radiation safety. The concept of keeping radiation exposures “As Low As Reasonably Practicable” (ALARP) remains fundamental to all areas of radiological practice. Through the development of local rules, risk assessments, staff training, equipment reviews, and workplace monitoring, radiation protection advisers support organisations in maintaining high standards of safety.
Education and continuous professional development are also essential for ensuring competence and the safe use of radiation. Those who work with radiation must keep their knowledge and skills up to date. Ongoing training helps individuals understand their responsibilities, recognise potential hazards, and apply best practices within their workplace. RPS training must be refreshed at periods between three but not exceeding five years.
World Radiography Day is therefore more than a celebration of a historic scientific discovery. It is an opportunity to celebrate everyone involved in the safe use of radiation and acknowledge their contribution to protecting people, supporting innovation, and enabling the technologies that improve our lives every day.
